Holiday World: A Wooden Roller Coaster Wonderland for Enthusiasts

By HoliBlogger Don H.

For wooden roller coaster fans, there’s no place quite like Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari.

Tucked away in the heart of Indiana, this family-owned park has become a pilgrimage site for those who crave the rickety, exhilarating charm that only a wooden coaster can provide.

Holiday World isn’t just any park; it’s home to three of the most celebrated wooden roller coasters in the world—The Voyage, The Raven, and The Legend.

Year after year, these coasters dominate industry and enthusiast polls, consistently ranking among the best

On to the Coasters!

The star of the trio is undeniably The Voyage.

Since its debut in 2006, The Voyage has been the talk of the coaster community.

Its 1.2 miles of relentless track features five underground tunnels, three 90-degree banked turns, a triple-down, and a record-setting 24.2 seconds of airtime. Riding The Voyage feels like a journey back to the golden age of roller coasters, with its relentless pace and intense airtime that make it a must-ride for any serious coaster enthusiast.

Simply put, it’s the best wooden roller coaster that I’ve ridden!

Then there’s The Raven, the coaster that put Holiday World on the map.

Opened in 1995, this wooden masterpiece was named the “World’s Best Wooden Coaster” by Amusement Today in its very first year and held the title for several more years.

The Raven is a classic out-and-back design, with a thrilling drop into a densely wooded area that makes you feel like you’re flying through the forest. The compact layout and sudden drops keep riders on the edge of their seats, and despite its age, The Raven still packs a punch.

But we can’t forget The Legend, a tribute to Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”

Since its opening in 2000, The Legend has been thrilling riders with its spooky theming and intense layout. The double helix at the end of the ride is a particular highlight, whipping riders around with a force that’s hard to forget.

Like its siblings, The Legend’s combination of speed, airtime, and perfectly timed surprises makes it a perennial favorite among wooden coaster enthusiast

Each of these coasters has its own unique personality, but together, they create an experience that I find hard to find anywhere else. The park’s dedication to maintaining these rides in top condition is evident in every ride cycle.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned coaster enthusiast, the trio of The Voyage, The Raven, and The Legend offer a timeless thrill that keeps you coming back for more.

For those of us who grew up with a love for wooden coasters, there’s something special about the way these rides make you feel. They’re full of character, and bring a sense of nostalgia that’s hard to find in today’s world of sleek, steel giants. Holiday World has captured that magic, offering a haven for those who appreciate the artistry and engineering that go into creating a world-class wooden roller coaster.

Where Is Holiday World?

Conveniently located near several major cities, Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari is an easy day trip or weekend getaway. Whether you’re coming from Louisville, Lexington, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Nashville, St. Louis, or Columbus, this wooden roller coaster wonderland is well worth the trip.
